2023 Adult Learn to Hunt Upland Birds Program
Date(s): Sep 09 - 10, 2023
Hours: 9:00 AM
Event: 2023 Adult Learn to Hunt Upland Birds Program
The 2023 Adult Learn to Hunt Upland Birds Program aims to help you develop all the skills necessary to hunt safely and independently. In addition to hands-on learning, participants will be provided with online content that can be completed at home to maximize the experience. This program intends to provide a safe, comfortable atmosphere where adults with no prior hunting experience can learn to hunt and develop an appreciation and understanding of the hunter's role in conservation and the importance of being a steward of the resource and habitat. The course will also create an excellent opportunity for participants to meet other adult-onset hunters and experienced hunters who can be a resource beyond the program.
The program is comprised of two weekends plus one Saturday morning. The first is an instructional weekend held September 9th & 10 at the MN Horse and Hunt Club in Prior Lake, MN. Here is just some of what you will learn and do this weekend:
- 5 step shooting program review
- Loading and shooting different types of shotguns
- Learning instinctive shooting methods
- Shooting clay targets
- Clothing basics for upland hunting
- Cleaning birds
- Finding birds afield
- Intro to hunting behind both flushing and pointing dogs
- Going afield together and actually hunting birds.
On Saturday, September 30th, you will be invited to hunt planted birds at the Horse and Hunt Club in Prior Lake, Mn. from 9 am until 1 pm. Lunch will be included. We will supply three birds per student all at no additional cost.
The second weekend is a wild bird hunt guided by trained hunters from our chapter with dogs. The date will be announced at class, but it will be in October after pheasant opener, You will learn in the field about habitat, cover types, game bird biology, and the do's and don'ts of public land hunting. This will be in pheasant country (outstate Minnesota); exact location is TBD and will be determined closer to the event date. You are encouraged to get overnight accommodations and hunt again on Sunday if you'd like!
You will need to have completed the Minnesota Department of Natural Resource's (DNR) Firearm Safety program in order to participate. It is a class that can be completed online on the MN DNR website.

Youth Learn to Shoot A Shotgun
Date(s): Sunday, May 21, 2023
Hours: 12:00 PM
Event: Youth Learn to Shoot A Shotgun
Every summer, Metro Area Pheasants Forever provides a free opportunity to learn how to shoot a shotgun. We also teach 2nd-year participants to spend time in the field hunting safely. Learn to Shoot is our entry-level program and is most often the only way to take our Learn to Hunt program. The MN firearms safety certificate is not required for Learn to Shoot. You must signup for each session of this program if you want to attend more than one. We like students to attend all three sessions if possible to broaden their experience level with a gun in their hand. We require students who want to continue to Learn to Hunt the following year to take all three sessions of Learn to Shoot first.
Cost: FREE
Participant Requirements: Must be 12 – 18 years of age for Learn to Shoot.

Learn to hunt is a three-session program; you must attend two out of three in order to qualify for the hunts, but attending all three is highly recommended. A Minnesota gun safety certificate is required for all participants in Learn to Hunt. There are also hunt program videos to watch as part of this class (homework!) You can find these interesting videos on the YOUTH page under the Learn to Hunt description.

Youth Wingshooting Program
The Metro Chapter Wing Shooting System is specifically designed to pass on the fun and excitement of wing shooting for youth by building FIVE SIMPLE STEPS FOR SUCCESS. Each step moves seamlessly to the next and culminates in hitting more targets. The system is easy to use AND easy to remember! Each student will learn to shoot a shotgun properly. Our five-step system will teach students their dominant eye, establish foot position and an appropriate leaning, mount a shotgun, point at a target, concentrate on a target and ultimately break it. The system is designed to give the student the basics, so they feel comfortable carrying and shooting a shotgun before entering a field to hunt. In addition, our program provides the foundation for a student to advance his or her skills in a shooting sports program. See more details on the YOUTH page of this website. Dates/Times Sunday, May 21st / Noon to 2 pm Sunday, July 9th / Noon to 2 pm Sunday, August 6th / Noon to 2 pm
